Confinement

It is widely known that there are  confinement procedure to follow after giving birth. These are not easy to follow and are often dreaded by many new mummies. It is often a conflict starter with your family too, especially with the mothers and mother in-laws.

Myself is a confinement rules breaker and I have reputable sources* to back me up.

  • Yes, I bathed everyday and even washed my hair during the confinement period.
  • I drank alot of plain water and did not drank much of any of the red date tea.
  • I did not even touch alcohol because I was breastfeeding
  • I slept everyday with air conditioner
  • I turn on the fan once I woke up and still blow directly at me.

We believed these rules are passed down from China where many of our ancestors and elderlies came from. China has winter and thus it would make more sense to follow these rules. But hello, we are super near the equator, I think we will get heat stroke first.

To appease the elderlies into me bathing everyday, I got this lemongrass shower gel, recommended by my cousin. It is a shower gel said to specially formulated for use during confinement period. It smells pretty good and quite a huge bottle so can use very long.

I do drink those herbal soups to replenish my body (hopefully). I always got mine from Lao Ban Niang because it is super convenient. Theirs are pre-packed soup packages labelled clearly from day 1 to day 30 and including the mandatory Sheng Hua Tang. It even comes with a booklet detailing the ingredients and purpose of each package, when and how to cook them.

The pre-packed soup packages are very fuss free. Just open the package according to the number of day and put into water to boil, usually with some meat. No need to think what herbs to buy or prepare.

On top of that, you can order early but ask to deliver only when you give birth. You can let them know your E.D.D and just text them on the day of giving birth. This ensures your herbs are freshest, instead of buying early and wait till who knows when you give birth.

When you pop, there are already alot of things to take care. So with such setup, one less thing to pull hair :)

Teethers

Most babies start teething from 4 to 6 months. You would notice they drool frequently too. During this time, it is good to get some teethers. I have tried a couple of teethers for my kids and found some that work better. Go for teethers that are light, easy to wash and sterilize, and closed loops (to prevent parts from dropping out and cause choking!). The traditional ones are those with water inside and usually kept in fridge to cool it like the ones below: They are good as it is one piece design and putting in the fridge will cool the water in it, soothing for the babies. But one worry of alot of parents is it might tear and the water in it is consumed by babies. Another type is those with plushie. We don't fancy it as the plushie would often be soaked with the baby's saliva. We feel it is very unhygenic as bacteria might get trapped in the plushie. So after experimenting with my eldest, I finally settle down with Pigeon training teether Step 1 and Step 2 . These are highly r...
