Teethers

Most babies start teething from 4 to 6 months. You would notice they drool frequently too. During this time, it is good to get some teethers. I have tried a couple of teethers for my kids and found some that work better. Go for teethers that are light, easy to wash and sterilize, and closed loops (to prevent parts from dropping out and cause choking!). The traditional ones are those with water inside and usually kept in fridge to cool it like the ones below: They are good as it is one piece design and putting in the fridge will cool the water in it, soothing for the babies. But one worry of alot of parents is it might tear and the water in it is consumed by babies. Another type is those with plushie. We don't fancy it as the plushie would often be soaked with the baby's saliva. We feel it is very unhygenic as bacteria might get trapped in the plushie. So after experimenting with my eldest, I finally settle down with Pigeon training teether Step 1 and Step 2 . These are highly r...

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

When I first hear that I had Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, GDM in short, my world came crashing down. Since upper Secondary school times, I had transformed from a normal sweet tooth to a non sweet tooth. Because I had family history of diabetes and having seen how they had to prick themselves with needles before every meals to take blood glucose readings and all the medications they had to take, I don't wish to be one of them. So for past decade, I seldom touch sugary food and drinks. I changed from drinking milo to milo kosong, teh c to teh c kosong, condensed milk to evaporated milk, etc. I thought I would not get GDM with such diet. But when my gynae told me the news, I was very depressed. I kept thinking how was that possible? I have avoided sugars like plague. If it wasn't because of my diet, then it was my family history which is unavoidable. After a walk at the beach, I decided to fight GDM since it was something I cannot avoid. I did research and also experimented myse...

Walkers

Do you know that walkers are actually not intended for babies to use for learning walking? It is in fact a mobility aid for disabled children*! " This type of walker does not help your baby to learn to walk. It is dangerous and potentially fatal. In fact, Canada has already banned the sale of baby walkers.   " I have once heard from my child preschool teacher that a student they had before wasn't able to walk as she keep tip toeing due to prolonged use of walker and her parents had to bring the child to KKH for walking therapy! So how can a baby learn how to walk without these walkers? Use a play pen or play yard or play centre that is stationery. I have had a play yard that myself and my whole family find it very good - iFam Play Yard .  Why do we love this play yard? It is made in Korea and has pretty good quality. It is still strong after more than 5 years. It has a double lock. This is very important as many play yards out there doesn't have this feature. Mind you...

Epidural

The pain of giving birth is something one cannot imagine. I cannot imagine and don't want to experience it too. So I had always known that I need pain relief which drills down to the 2 most common ones - Epidural or laughing gas. I have heard stories and direct from my cousin who used it, that laughing gas would make you too drowsy to be able to push properly so I cancelled that option out. There has also been rumor that epidural would cause back pain since it is administered at your back (spine to be exact). But I did further research and confirmed that this is just a myth*. It is normal to experience temporary backpain at the site of your epidural but it should go away after a few days. Backache is common after childbirth with or without epidural since you have to keep carrying your newborn and placing him/her down. I did epidural for all my childbirths and I did not experience long term backache at all.  During my first epidural experience, I reckoned the nurse released a little...

Confinement

It is widely known that there are  confinement procedure to follow after giving birth. These are not easy to follow and are often dreaded by many new mummies. It is often a conflict starter with your family too, especially with the mothers and mother in-laws. Myself is a confinement rules breaker and I have reputable sources* to back me up. Yes, I bathed everyday and even washed my hair during the confinement period.  I drank alot of plain water and did not drank much of any of the red date tea. I did not even touch alcohol because I was breastfeeding I slept everyday with air conditioner I turn on the fan once I woke up and still blow directly at me. We believed these rules are passed down from China where many of our ancestors and elderlies came from. China has winter and thus it would make more sense to follow these rules. But hello, we are super near the equator, I think we will get heat stroke first. To appease the elderlies into me bathing everyday, I got this lemongrass...

Nail Biting

I have observed that nail biting in kids often start around age of 3 or 4. I tried many ways to stop my kid from biting -  pulling fingers away, firmly telling not to do that, bribing, rewarding, trimming it to very short..nothing works. Toe nail was also not spared. Until I got an idea of applying chilli sauce on the nails, I wondered if there was already such product specifically to tackle nail biting issue. I found my ultimate solution -  Bite No More  by Manicare. Price is a little on the high side but it can last for very very long time as you don't need alot for each application. Everyday morning and evening, I religiously applied 2 layers on the nails. In just a month, the nail biting entirely stopped!  Initially the first few days, you might still catch them trying to bite their nails but those were out of habit. They will irked at the taste and eventually stop. Try it and let me know if it works for your child too.

Private or Public Hospital

2 blue lines!! Congratulations! What's next? You have to decide which hospital do you want to give birth at? Also which gynae to engage? Some gynae may only practise at certain hospital, so make sure you ask!  I had experience in going through the maternity checkups and giving birth in both private and government hospitals. So in this post, I will describe the difference. During my first pregnancy, I wanted a female doctor so I found and engaged a renowned gynae through word of mouth who practise mainly at Mount Alvernia. She is  Dr Goh Shen Li . When I first tested positive, I emailed her clinic and very quickly I received a reply and arranged the first consultation within the week. She is a very friendly and patient doctor, very experienced as well.  During my subsequent pregnancy, I decided on government hospital for the subsidies. I had to go to polyclinic first for a referral before I was scheduled an appointment 1 or 2 weeks later for my first consultation. In priva...
