Walkers

Do you know that walkers are actually not intended for babies to use for learning walking? It is in fact a mobility aid for disabled children*!

"This type of walker does not help your baby to learn to walk. It is dangerous and potentially fatal. In fact, Canada has already banned the sale of baby walkers. "

I have once heard from my child preschool teacher that a student they had before wasn't able to walk as she keep tip toeing due to prolonged use of walker and her parents had to bring the child to KKH for walking therapy!

So how can a baby learn how to walk without these walkers? Use a play pen or play yard or play centre that is stationery. I have had a play yard that myself and my whole family find it very good - iFam Play Yard

Why do we love this play yard?

  • It is made in Korea and has pretty good quality. It is still strong after more than 5 years.
  • It has a double lock. This is very important as many play yards out there doesn't have this feature. Mind you, kids are very smart. Without the double lock, they would be able to open it somehow even if it could only be opened from the outside. Thank goodness, with the double lock, ours are not able to sneak out no matter how hard they try
  • It is stable and can be kept stationary, perfect for children to hold on to and cruise around.
  • It is easy to set up and can be customized with the panels. Big or small, rectangle or square or even odd shape.
  • It is made of safe plastic
  • No big holes where child might get stuck

All my kids used this play yard to help them in learning to walk and they are able to walk when they just turned 12 months old.

Confinement

It is widely known that there are  confinement procedure to follow after giving birth. These are not easy to follow and are often dreaded by many new mummies. It is often a conflict starter with your family too, especially with the mothers and mother in-laws. Myself is a confinement rules breaker and I have reputable sources* to back me up. Yes, I bathed everyday and even washed my hair during the confinement period.  I drank alot of plain water and did not drank much of any of the red date tea. I did not even touch alcohol because I was breastfeeding I slept everyday with air conditioner I turn on the fan once I woke up and still blow directly at me. We believed these rules are passed down from China where many of our ancestors and elderlies came from. China has winter and thus it would make more sense to follow these rules. But hello, we are super near the equator, I think we will get heat stroke first. To appease the elderlies into me bathing everyday, I got this lemongrass...

Teethers

Most babies start teething from 4 to 6 months. You would notice they drool frequently too. During this time, it is good to get some teethers. I have tried a couple of teethers for my kids and found some that work better. Go for teethers that are light, easy to wash and sterilize, and closed loops (to prevent parts from dropping out and cause choking!). The traditional ones are those with water inside and usually kept in fridge to cool it like the ones below: They are good as it is one piece design and putting in the fridge will cool the water in it, soothing for the babies. But one worry of alot of parents is it might tear and the water in it is consumed by babies. Another type is those with plushie. We don't fancy it as the plushie would often be soaked with the baby's saliva. We feel it is very unhygenic as bacteria might get trapped in the plushie. So after experimenting with my eldest, I finally settle down with Pigeon training teether Step 1 and Step 2 . These are highly r...
